Ridgeway Primary Academy

Reading and Phonics

From the start of Reception children are taught to read using a synthetic phonics programme. The programme we use at Ridgeway is called “Soundswrite”. More details can be found at http://www.sounds-write.co.uk/

Our reading scheme is arranged using phonically based books which mirror the progression of the Soundswrite scheme.

When children are competent at decoding they are able to choose age appropriate books to read from our well stocked library and classroom book areas. Children have daily opportunities to read at school and are encouraged to read regularly at home.

Phonics Online Course

Help your child to read and write: New online course 'Help your child to read and write' is a free, online course. It's aimed specifically at parents and carers who are interested in putting their children on the first steps to literacy and it covers the first seven units of the Initial Code. The follow-up course, covering the rest of the Initial Code, will be published on Udemy later in the year. You can find the course by clicking on the above title.
