History

Our aim in history is for children to have a knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world. We have identified key historical concepts that inform our topics and  have built  a coherent  curriculum  around them. We enable children to  develop an understanding of chronology allowing them to step back and view the "big picture" of history-how and why events unfold in the way they do and how they are related. The history curriculum is supported by visits  to places of interests and a range of speakers.

Geography

Our curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and understanding of Britain's geography and that of the wider world. Children are taught through topics and build knowledge of  geographical concepts such as place, space, environment, interconnection, sustainability, scale and change. Children learn about human and physical geography. They learn how to use maps, atlases, points of the compass, grid references, symbols and keys. Fieldwork supports learning in geography.

Religious Education

The 1988 Education Act requires Religious Education to be provided for all pupils in the school. It must be non-denominational and broadly Christian in character.

RE is taught in accordance with the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus. Children learn about world religions as well as Christianity, through a common theme approach.

A daily act of worship is led by members of staff. Members of local clergy are also invited to visit Ridgeway and lead our assemblies. We feel that by inviting all denominations we reflect the variety and places of worship of our children and their parents. Special assemblies mark the major religious festivals.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from either Religious Education or the daily collective Act of Worship. Such a request should be made to the Headteacher in writing.
